Good Example #1  - Barzillai the Gileadite               1/4/09
Today we start our series of lessons about people in the Bible who are not commonly discussed but are examples, both good and bad, to us today.  The first is about a man who didn't let age stop him from helping someone else.  Our text for today is 2 Samuel 17: 27 - 29 and 2 Samuel 19: 31 - 39

1) BACKGROUND
    A.  Barzillai was part of a group that helped David's men. 
    B.  Notice how much they brought.
    C.  He continued to help David.
    D.  He showed humility, he simply wanted to help.  Was blessed by David.  Returned home.  

2) A LIFE OF SERVICE
   
A.  Service can be at any age.  Sometimes we forget that many read about were older still serving God.
         1.  Moses - called from the wilderness at 80. -  Exodus 3
         2.  Aaron -  was 83
         3.  Daniel - spent over 70 years serving the Lord, Daniel 6
         4.  Joshua - Joshua 24:29
         5.  Caleb - Joshua 14: 6-11
         6.  Zacharias and Elizabeth - Luke 1:7
         7.  Simeon and Anna - Lk 2: 25 - 38  served God "in fasting and prayers day and night"
    B.  What did Paul do when in prison?  He wrote letters! Ephesians, Philipians, Colossians and Philemon
    C. Psa 92: 12 - 15
        
3) AN ATTITUDE OF SERVICE
   
A.   Hospitality
    B.   Benevolence
    C.  Teaching - Titus 2: 3 - 5
    D.  Time in prayer
    E.  Psa 71: 17 - 18 - teach the next generation
    F.  Psa 78: 1 - 8 - same idea
    G.  A daily renewal - 2 Cor 4: 16
