LESSONS FROM JEHU                                3/23/08
We continue our series on Old Testament characters.  This account is from the book Second Kings.  In chapter 10 we read about a King of Israel by the name of Jehu.  At God's command he slew Jezebel and her son, Joram.  He also slew the sons of the house of Ahab, destroyed the temples of the false gods, and broke the image of Baal.  You would think that he was doing everything right in obedience to God, but what is said about him is "But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God..."  What do we see in Jehu?

1)  JEHU POSSIBLY WAS ALWAYS CONCERNED WITH OTHER'S SINS BUT UNCONCERNED ABOUT HIMSELF,
APPLICATION #1 - SOMETIMES THIS IS SEEN IN A JUDGMENTAL ATTITUDE.   POWERPOINT

a.  Jesus talked about this attitude in Mt 7: 3-4

1dokos - a log as opposed to a karphos - a piece of nothing.  A writer (Morris, The Gospel of Matthew) once said "it is a curious feature of the human race [that] a profound ignorance of oneself is ofter combined with an arrogant presumption of knowledge about others, especially about their own faults."  Also, Robertson Whiteside said in Biblical Studies, 'while we generally have no difficulty spotting another's shortcomings, we sometimes appallingly lack insight into our own."
          2.  vss 3-4 in response to judging in 1-2.  Jesus does not necessarily condemn judging.  What is being condemned is the hypercritical spirit of judgmentalism that constantly finds fault with what others say and do. Someone once said it was an arrogant attitude of superiority where someone felt entitled to assess the failings of others.
          3.  "Judge not" does not mean that a Christian can't engage in critical thinking or even reach a negative conclusion regarding another.
          4.  The words Jesus uses here are sometimes mistakenly used to prohibit all manner of judgment of others. i.e. constructive criticism to the hearers benefit, church discipline, or even exposing those who teach error.
          5.  Jesus does not rule out all forms of judgment.  Look at the immediate context of the dogs and the swine!  Look at 7: 15-20.  - we must make judgments regarding false teachers.

a.  1 Cor 5: 9-13 - we have a responsibility to judge those inside the local church.
               b.   I John 4:1 -test the spirits
               c.   John 7:24 - Jesus said to judge with righteous judgment
               d.  We must judge with love and mercy Jas 2:13
               e.  As we said earlier, we carefully judge when we have corrected our own faults!
                f.
vs 6 - we can also be too lenient.  This is referring to people who have no respect or disesteem sacred things.  Who want nothing to do with a pearl of great price (Mt 13:46).  We shouldn't force feed the gospel to those who contemptuously reject it.  To these we should shake the dust off our feet (10:24).  We then spend the time with the receptive (Acts 18: 5-6, 1 Cor 2: 14-15, Titus 3: 10-11) .  Sometimes a person is referred to as a wolf(15) or a fox (Luke 13: 32)
          4.  A hypercritical, hypocritical attitude invites retaliation and places us into a position where we will be more harshly judged by the Ultimate Judge.(18:35)
          5.  We should not be engaged in self-righteous hypocritical judging
          6.  We must be very careful about judging because of the beam that might be in our own eye, but to say that Jesus forbid judging is to abuse what Jesus taught.
          7.  What about opinions?
APPLICATION #2 - SOMETIMES THIS IS SEEN IN A SELF-SERVING RELIGIOUS ATTITUDE(WHAT'S IN IT  FOR ME?)
          1.  authades - "self-pleasing" : autos - "self" and hedomai "to please".  This is someone who is dominated by self-interest and inconsiderate of others; who arrogantly assets his own will
               a.  Titus 1:7 - not someone who is qualified to be an elder
               b.  2 Peter 2:10

  c.  1 Tim 3:31- attitude needed
          2.  3 John 9 - Diotrephes
          3.  Religious leaders of Jesus day.  They would follow the Law "per se" but it wasself-serving, hypocritical
               a.  Pharisees - Luke 16: 14-15; Luke 18:10ff
APPLICATION #3 - JEHU DIDN'T WANT TO DO ALL THINGS; SERVE GOD WITH THE WHOLE HEART
          1.  As we studied in our class on Wednesday we have the whole Word we are to follow completely.
               a.  John 16:13 - "He will guide you into all truth" (Holy Spirit)
               b.  James 1:25

c.  2 Peter 1:3 - "all things that pertain to life and godliness"

d.  2 Timothy 3: 16-17

e.  Jude 3 -  "earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to all the saints"

  2.  Many want to "pick and choose"

2)  WHAT HAPPENED AS A RESULT OF JEHU'S DISOBEDIENCE? 2 KINGS 10:31

    1.  VS 32 - Israel paid a price
          2.  We will pay a price if we are not wholly obedient - Mt 25:31

ANOTHER VALUABLE LESSON FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
