OBEY!                                                                6/28/09
Today we want to discuss the true nature of obedience.  When we think of having a Lord and Savior, we think of the fact that He wants and expects obedience from His children.  We, of course, are free moral agents, but we will only receive eternal life through obedience to His will.

1)  GROWS OUT OF THE NATURE OF GOD
     A.  The only time a man can say he's in the right relationship with God is when he is obedient.

2)  OBEDIENCE DENOTES THE PROPER RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD AND MAN
     A.   The case of Saul - 1 Sam 15: 22,23 
           1.  Burnt offerings      vs.                 Obedience
           2.  Obedience             vs.                 Sacrifice
           3.  Obedience             vs                  The fat of rams
           4.  Rebellion                -                    Sin of Witchcraft
           5.  Stubborness          -                    Sin of Idolatry
     B.   God demands obedience   Jeremiah 11: 7,8
     C.   God blessed Abraham because of his obedience -  Gen 22: 18,  22: 12
     D.   Isaac- blessed and received the promise,  Why?  Because of Abraham's obedience  Gen 26: 3-5
     E.   Proper relationship between God and Israel to be sustained by their obedience
           1.  Obey my voice, Keep My covenant  =   Peculiar Treasure, Kingdom of Peace, A Holy Nation
     F.   More passages - Deut 11: 27-28, 30: 1-10,  Jer 11: 1-8,  1 Sam 12: 14-15, Heb 10:31, Matt 28:10,
                                      Isa 1: 19-20 - obey, eat good of the land; disobey, be devoured by the sword
                                      Zech 6: 15 - diligently obey?  You will be blessed  THAT'S A PROMISE!

3)  DISOBEDIENCE?  EXPECT TO BE SEVERELY PUNISHED
     A.  Deut 11:28 - If you disobey?  You will be cursed!
     B.  Deut 13: 1-5 - False prophet leads you to other gods?  He will be put to death!
     C.  Deut 28:62 - Why only a few in number?  Because of disobedience!
     D.  Lev 26: 14-33 - Israel's puishments for disobedience
     E.  Jer 9: 13-16, 18: 10-12 - Israel's fate for wickedness and disobdience
     F.  Isa 65: 12 - Bow down to slaughter because of disobedience!
     G.  Jer 12: 15-17, 3: 12,13 - Don't obey?  You will be cursed
     H.  The NT repeats the same principles as the OT

4)  THE NATURE OF OBEDIENCE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
     A.  Obedience is the cause and the condition of salvation as far as man is concerned
           EVIDENCE - Faith ( confidence, conviction) - is unto obedience - which brings enjoyment, blessings
     B.  Paul -
          1.  Rom 1:5 - Grace and apostleship for obedience of faith among all the nations
          2.  Rom 16: 26 - Gospel made known to all nations for obedience of the faith 
          3.  Acts 6: 7 - a great company of priests were obedient to the faith
          4.  Heb 11: 5 - By faith, Abraham, when called, obeyed
     C.  Christ and the individual  Heb 5: 8,9
          1.  Became saved because of obedience - Heb 5: 8,9
          2.  Stayed saved because of obedience  1 Pet 1:14
     D.  Christ and the Apostles
          1.  If you love me, what?  John 14:15 
          2.  You will keep my words John 14:23
          3.  Faith working by love  Gal 6:5
     E.  What about the individual's thoughts?  2 Cor 10:5,6
     F.   Christ shows the perfect example to God  Phil 2: 5-8, Heb 5: 8,9, John 4: 34, Rom 5:19
     G.  What is promised to the disobedient?  Vengeance!  Heb 10: 26-31, Rom 12: 19-21, 2 Thess 1: 7-9
           1 Pet 4:17.  The nature of disobedience?  Eph 2: 1-3, 5:6, Col 3:6

Conclusion:

1.  What is tied to obedience?  Faith!
     A.  Faith working through love - Gal 5:6
     B.  Faith made perfect through works - Jas 2: 14-26
     C.  By faith Abraham obeyed - Heb 11:8

2.  Purified your souls through obeying the truth - 1 Pet 1:22,
3.  Whoever shall call on the name of the Lord will be saved  Rom 10:13
     Send > Preach> Hear> Believe> Calling (Saved)
4.  Abraham wavered not through Unbelief..when a man ceases to believe he ceases to obey
    
Rom 4: 16-25, Heb 3: 12-13, Heb 10: 32-39.  Conversely,  when a man ceases to obey, it's because of
     unbelief.
