 MARKS OF MATURITY                                                  6/6/10
Everyone understands the idea of becoming "mature."  Parents recall when they realize their children are maturing.  Older people see signs of maturation physically.  There are "indicators" of maturity.  But, there are indicators of spiritual maturity. 1 Cor 3: 1-3; 1 Pet 2: 1-3; 2 Pet 3:18; Eph 4: 15-16  We should be aware of these..

1)  GROWING UP
     A.  1 Cor 14:20 - BE MATURE!
     B.  Heb 5: 12-14 - at some point, no more baby food!
     C.  Being able to listen to correction and make the changes necessary.

2)  THE ABILITY TO PROPERLY DISCERN
     A.  Heb 5: 11-15 - your senses get trained with ingesting the solid food.
     B.  Phil 1: 9-10 - Paul prayed that the Phillipians practiced proper discernment.

3)  A STEADFAST LIFE
     A.  Eph. 4: 13-14 - an individual that's not tossed about; staying the course with our eyes on the goal.
     B.  In the second letter to the Thessalonians (1:1-2) there was an encouragement to stay the course under persecution.

4)  THE ABILITY TO CONTROL THE TONGUE
     A.  Jas 3:2 - a good discussion of the tongue and our proper control
     B.  Not gossiping, slandering etc.

5)  NOT RETALIATING AND BEING ABLE TO FORGIVE OTHERS
     A.  Mt 5: 38-48 - not practicing eye to eye and loving others..

6)  LIVING A LIFE THAT WE COULD RECOMMEND TO OTHERS - 1 Cor 4:16
     A.  Paul could say "imitate me" - 1 Cor 11:1; Phil 4:9
     B.  Could you recommend your attendance patterns, giving practices, prayer life, Bible study, soul-winning procedures, recreational pursuits and attitude traits - 1 Tim 4:1

7)   NOT BEING SELF-CENTERED
    
A.  Mark 8: 34-35 - denying the sinful self.
     B.  Focused on OTHERS!

There are more indicators, but the point is, we are to mature.
