GLORY IN SHAME?                                      7/13/08
It's hard to imagine for some that there is glory in their shame.  But that's exactly what the Bible says.  This is our topic this morning.

1)  PHILIPPIANS 3: 18-19-"For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set theri minds on earthly things"
    
A. Walk is a figurative term for living
     B. Many walk this way - as opposed to Phil 3:17 
     C. Notice Paul's deep concern for them, an overwhelming sadness
     D. Their end is destruction
     E. They live for lust, so much so, they glory in shameful things!
         a.  Don't believe it?  It's everywhere! (discuss)
     F. Why? Their minds are on earthly things.  "Garbage in, garbage out"

2)  
THE ATTITUDE - WHAT CAN HAPPEN?
    
A. Psalm 36:1-2 - Notice the callous disregard for God
     B. Ephesians 5:5 - that person has absolutely no hope, notice it doesn't say a few might, it says "no person"
     C. 1 Cor 5:2 - 6 - the negative influence is pervasive.
     D. Proverbs 16:18 - "pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling"
     E. All of these attitudes come from where?  Mark 7:21-23
     F. 
This person has no hope!
    

3)  REPENTANCE AND FORGIVENESS OF SINS   
     
A. One needs to realize they are in this state.  How?  Compare their life against the STANDARD.
     B. Jonah 3:10 - Ninevah "turned from their evil way.." See also Jonah 3:5-10
     C. Their works included works of repentance - they were obedient to the teachings of God and demonstrated their repentance.
     D. The example of King Ahab - I Kings 21: 25-29
         1.  grief exhibited over idolatry followed by humility as he repented  -
     E. A change of mind that causes a change of direction - Romans 6: 17-18; 1 Cor 6: 9-11
         1.  a brother once wrote "a thief cannot repent AND keep the stolen goods, a slanderer cannot repent AND fail to correct the lie, a child-napper cannot repent AND keep the stolen child and an adulterer cannot take a wife, repent AND keep the wife God has not authorized" 
     F.  How important is repentance? 
Luke 13:3-5; Luke 24:47; Acts 2:38; Acts 3:19; Acts 17:30;  
          2 Cor 7:10

4)  PERSONAL DISCIPLINE TO STAY THE COURSE 
    
A. Proverbs 4:23 - "watch over your heart with all diligence.."
     B. Proverbs 12:1 - "whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid"
     C. Proverbs 15: 32 - 33
     D. Proverbs 17:10 - "a rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred blows into a fool"
