HOW DOES ONE BECOME LIKE CHRIST?      7/20/08
Our passage this morning is found in Galatians 4:19.  Notice how Paul states that he again labors until Christ forms in the Galatians.  How does that happen?  Let's examine this..

1)  CHRISTIAN - THE CONCEPT OF THE TERM
     A.  The term Christian might be the most misused and misunderstood term in the world.  The name in itself refers to a person who is "Christ-like" or in the "likeness" of Christ.  One who is a true disciple strives to become like Christ in all things.  Being a Christian is more than something you call yourself without any forethought and without a true understanding of what it really means.
     B.  Galatians 3:27 - read
          1.  When one is baptized into Christ they "put on" Christ.  We are clothed with Christ.  But, let's think about that for a minute. What does Thayer say about "putting on" Christ?  It's figurative to mean to take on the characteristics, virtues, intentions (Col 3:12) and "to become so possessed of the mind of Christ as in thought, feeling and action to resemble Him and, as it were, reproduce the life He lived."
          2.   As pupils we want to be as the teacher - Luke 6:40

2)   A TRANSFORMING PROCESS
      A.  Children mimic their parents, want to be like them, just as children of God want to mimic their Father
            1.  1 Corinthians 11:1; Ephesians 5:1
      B.  In the world of psychology there's something called behavior modification, a way of changing people's character by changing the way they behave.  Notice what Paul instructed the churches in Ephesus and Colossae...
            1.  Ephesians 4:28; Colossians 3:17
      C.  A process of more than just stopping old habits, but replacing them with new ones of godly living.
            1.  Colossians 3: 9-10 - lay aside and a new self
            2.  Ephesians 4: 22-24 - same thought
      D.  Notice these passages talk about RENEWING PROCESS.  This is a new concept to man people.  The Greeks thought the outer man, the schema, changed, but not the inner man, the morphe.  Many want to go find themselves or being accepted as they are.
            1.  The Christian, though, must change (meta) his morphe and be transformed (metamorphis) to the Lord's will.
                 a.  Romans 12:2 - a transformation
                 b.  2 Corinthians 4:16 - renewal of the inward man day by day
      E.  It starts with a decision, a mind set.  You always have a choice whether to do right or wrong, good or evil.  Decide to do the right thing and decide to carry it out no matter what.
                 a.  Colossians 3: 1-2 - set your mind on the things above
                 b.   Philippians 2:5 - the mind of Christ
                 c.   Philippians 3: 13-15 - forgetting what's behind and reaching forward

3)   IT'S CRITICAL - EITHER WE DO THIS OR BE LOST
       A. It's a daily struggle,  all have sinned (Romans 3:23)
       B.  More relevant passages - Psalms 51: 1-17 - David's request; John 14: 1-14 - seeing Jesus is seeing the Father; Philippians 3: 1-21 - Paul's transformation and hope to conformity; 2 Corinthians 3: 1-18 - the change of the Corinthians; 1 John 3: 1-18 - We know we shall be like Him

CONCLUSION - Discussion of the transformation process.  When people become Christians they determine to conform their lives to Christ, and that is an on-going process.  As with the converts in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost (hearing the sermon by Peter) and with the Ethiopian Eunuch (taught by Philip), both parties became Christians after a short teaching process.  They didn't have weeks of classes to prepare them to become Christians. They determined they needed to change, become Christians (put on Christ) and the transformation process was under way.
