"What Do I Owe You?"                                           7/25/10
At one time or another, everyone has purchased something and asked the person we're buying something from "what do I owe you?"  We often think in terms of physical items purchased, but in the spiritual sense we owe some things to our brothers and sisters in Christ.  Read Romans 1:14-15.  Paul felt a debt to share the gospel because of the wonderful blessings he received as a Christian.  This reminds us the obligation we have to share the word and the responsibility we have to each other, which is our lesson today.
1)  LOVE
     a.  Romans 13: 8-10 - the obligation to love our brethren is perpetual
     b.  It does the greatest good in accomplishing God's will.
     c.  John 13: 34-35 - Jesus gave the greatest example of this.  "to love one another as I have loved you"
     d.  John 15: 13, I John 3:16-18
     e.  ! Cor 13: 4-8 - a wonderful definition
2)  PROVOCATION - STIRRING UP - STIMULATE
     a.  Hebrews 10:24 - the word used here, in the Greek, means to "sharpen of the feeling or action" The word is used twice in the NT.
           1.  Acts 15:39 - describing the contention between Paul and Barnabas
           2.  Hebrews 10:24 - describing the sharpening the feeling and action of our brethren to love and good works.
     b.  Do we look constantly look at each other with a critical eye?  It's easy to run another person down. Or do we look at another with the intent to help another with the attitude of sharpening our brother's resolve, focus and determination to do better?
3)  EXHORTATION
     a.  Hebrews 10:25 - There are times when I need to do more than just say an encouraging word.  There are times when it's absolutely essential to encourage my brother just to hang on!
     b.  The word means to "call to one's side", in other words, to put your arm around one's shoulder.  Offering encouragement to keep one on track.
     c.  Barnabas was a great encourager. "Son of Encouragement" - Acts 4:36
     d.  1 Cor 14:26 - our items of worship are to offer up praise to God AND to be a source of exhortation.
4)  CONSOLATION
     a.  Romans 12:15 - it's more than just saying some encouraging or comforting words.  The idea expressed is of actually sitting down and crying with someone.  Sometimes things get very bad and there's no "quick fix."
     b.  Someone expressed it this way.."There are times when brethren don't need the criticism, the cold hard facts, told what we would if we were them, or even told that it will all work out.  We need to develop the sensitivity and concern to simply give these brethren what they need - a shoulder to cry on."
     c.  Empathy expressed -  1 Cor 12:26 , grows out of Romans 12: 4,5
5)  RESTORATION
     a.  Galatians 6:1 - What do we do when we notice that a brother is falling away?  We have the responsibility, debt, obligation to leave the 99 and go after the one who has strayed away. Luike 15:1-7
     b.  "Let somebody else do it ?"  - Where there are elders people say that's their job.  But we all have a responsibility.
     c.  James 5: 19-20 - does it say that it's just the elder's job?
We're good at standing and watching disasters happen.  Unfortunately, not good enough at stepping in and helping.  When a brother is falling away he is dying spiritually, he will lose his soul eternally.  We have the responsibility to restore..
