I recently read a wonderful outline by Marc Gibson on things we "ought" to do as Christians. Today we're going to talk about the things we "ought" to do, and Lord willing next week we'll talk about the "ought nots."
1. WE OUGHT TO OBEY ALL OF GOD'S COMMANDMENTS
A. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for this - Mt 23: 23
B. The Pharisees were condemned for leaving some things undone. Many pick and choose.
C. How is this avoided? Through devoted hearing and doing Mt 7: 24-25
D. 1 Thess 4:1; 1 John 2: 6
2. WE OUGHT TO OBEY GOD RATHER THAN MEN
A. Submit to authority - Rom 13: 1-7; 1 Pet 2: 13-17
1. Unless when human authority conflicts with God's authority, we must obey God.
a. Acts 4: 18; 5: 28
1. they wanted to know why the apostles disobeyed this command - Acts 5: 29
2. God and His will come first
3. HUSBANDS OUGHT TO LOVE THEIR WIVES AS THEMSELVES
A. It's to be a genuine love. does a husband sometimes more interest in other things?
1. Compare dating and married a while
2. Ephesians 5: 28
3. If husbands paid as much attentio their wives as to their own interests, more marriages would be happy and fulfilling.
4. WE OUGHT TO CONDUCT OURSELVES IN A HOLY MANNER
A. 2 Pet 3: 11 - This is after the teaching that the Day of the Lord will come.
B. 1 Pet 1: 15
C. We are to conduct ourselves properly at home, and of course we are to conduct ourselves properly in the House ofGod. 1 Tim 3: 15
5. WE OUGHT TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER
A. " Beloved if God so loves us, we also ought to love one another"
B. Brethren should love one another in the family of God, even if one should fall into error Gal 6:1, 10
C. God demonstrated his love - Rom 5: 6-8
D. We should love our fellow men and of course those of the household of God
Are we doing what we OUGHT to do?
