So What's On Your Mind? - 9/9/07

Our priorities determine what we think about.  They also tell our state of mind.  Jesus talked about our "treasures" in Matthew 6: 19-24.  These are the "treasures" that are truly important to us and can determine our eternal destiny.  So, what's on your mind?

1)  IN THE FIRST PLACE WE NEED TO EXAMINE THE MIND OF CHRIST

     A.  Phillipians 2: 5ff
          1.  Humble and Obedient - took on human form as a bond servant
          2.  Previous to verse 5 the encouragement was to be
               a.  of the same mind (like-minded)
               b.  the same love
               c.  unites in spirit
               d.  intent on one purpose
               e.  not selfish
                f.  not conceited
               g.  regarding others first

2)  THAT IS HEAVENLY - MINDED

     A.  Matthew 6:20 - You can't open up a bank account in heaven to deposit earthly things.  So, what do you put in the account?  Obedience, acts of kindness, good deeds, etc...

     B.  Colossians 3: 1-4 -  That mind strives to conform a life to Jesus Christ our Savior.
          1. Setting your mind on things above
          2. your life and way of thinking here has "died"
          3. the reward will be eternal

     C.  Philippians 1:27 - an attitude that is ready to work and that is worthy of the Gospel of Christ

3)  NOT EARTHLY - MINDED

     A. 1 John 2 : 15 - 17 - the path that leads to destruction
         1.  lust of the flesh
         2.  lust of the eyes
         3.  pride of life
         4.  When you walk down a path you should know where you're going and how to get there. Who would
take a hike and knowingly walk off the edge of a cliff to thier death?  You would be "out of your
mind" to do that!  What's different then about being earthly -  minded knowing that it leads to
              eternal destruction?

     B.  Ephesians 2 : 3
          1.  as many walked back then
          2.  as many walk right now
          3.  remedy - vs 4ff  we're thankful that Someone loves us and if we are heaveny - minded our sins will
be forgiven and that we can be in the "right frame of mind" to walk in good (heavenly) works. vs 10

     C.  Matthew 6:20 - would you put your money in an unsafe bank?
          1.  Many have safety deposit boxes to store valuables.  Why?  Most deposit money in institutions
that have security behind them (FDIC, etc) Why?  Who in their right mind who do something
               that is not secure?
          2.  Storing up earthly"treasures" (see 1 John 2 : 15-17) makes as much sense as cashing your weekly
pay and leaving it on the counter at a local restaurant hoping it will be there next week when you
go back.  You wouldn't be in your right mind to do that!

4)  NOT DOUBLE - MINDED

     A.  Matthew 6 : 24
          1.  many want to have "one foot in the world and one in the Church".  Sorry, it doesn't work that way!

     B   James 1 : 6 - 8
          1.  lack of faith will not be rewarding and shows instability
          2.  have you ever gone into the surf and tried to fight against the waves?  You can't be stable!

     C.  James 4 : 8ff
          1.  Repent, be Heavenly - minded("Draw near to God"), be stable
          2.  Be humble like Christ

Let's all be in our right minds!
