THE ORIGIN AND NATURE OF SIN

ORIGIN

1) The Garden of Eden - Adam and Eve's sin and it's consequence to them
    A. Gen 3: 1-8  God's law violated.
    B. Penalty - Gen 3:3 (cf. Ezek 18:20)
    C. Two deaths came as a result of sin
        1. Physical - became mortal - separated from the tree of life
        2. Spiritual - separated from God - Isa 59: 1-2
2) Consequences of Adam's sin to us
    A.  Sin entered world by Adam and death by sin  Rom 5:12
         1.  The first sin.  Sin entered by one man.  I Cor 15: 21-22
         2.  Must have been a violation of Gen 3:3
         3.  In what sense did all sin-bring death upon all?  Through Adam as federal head of the race.                Rom 5: 12-13 (Is this right?)  Heb 7. 
    B.  Physical death came as a result of Adam's sin.  Rom 5: 12-13  Man is separated from the tree of
        life, became dying men.
    C.  Man was made superior to woman.  Gen 3:16  Why?  1 Tim 2: 12-14
          1.  Man created first
          2.  Woman was beguiled
          3.  Now one must work for a living
          4.  Ground will not yield as before
          5.  Woman's conception and pain multiplied

NATURE OF SIN

1)  Sin is Lawlessness 1 John 3:4 (anomia - means either going beyond, or omitting, transgressing -
     Lawless.)
     A.  Jas 2:9 - showing partiality is sin and convicts them as transgressors
     B.  Deut. 9:7 - "you have been rebellious against the Lord..." Without law, self-willed, lawless
     C.  1 Tim 2:14 - "the woman being deceived fell into transgression" Violation of law, lawless, anomia
     D.  1 Cor 13:6 - "does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices in the truth"
     E.  1 Cor 9:21 - "without law" anomos
     F.  Rom 2:12 - "sinned without the law" anomos
     G.  1 Tim 1:9 - lawless and disobedient
2)  Sin is Transgression (parabasis)
     A.  Rom 4:15 -  wrath (word is parabasis)
     B.  Rom 5:14 - Adam's offense (transgression)
     C.  Gal 3: 19 - (law) added because of transgression
     D.  Heb 2:2 - transgression
     E.  Heb 9:15 - "transgressions under first covenant"
3)  Sin is Unrighteousness 1 John 5:17  (adikia - unrighteousness, perversion, wrong, injustice)
     A.  Psa 119:172 - "All your commandments are righteousness"
     B.  Psa 119:138 - "you have commanded your testimonies in righteousness"
     C.  Psa 119:175 
     D.  Rom 6: 13,14 - not to yield body as instrument of unrighteousness
     E.  John 7: 18 - a man that seeketh his own glory is unrighteous
     F.  Rom 1: 18 - unrighteousness of men who supress the truth in unrighteousness ( also vs 1:29)
     G.  Rom 2:8 - wrath and indignation for those who prative unrighteouness 
     H.  Rom 3:5 - unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God
     I.   2 Thess 2: 10,12 - deception of wickedness (unrighteousness)
     J.  Heb 8:12 - merciful to their iniquities (unrighteousness)
     K.  2 Pet 2: 13,15 - the wicked can love the wage of unrighteousness 
     L.  1 Jno 1:9 - the good news is we can be cleansed from all unrightoeusness
4)  Sin is born of Conceived Lust  Jas 1: 13-15
     A.  How a man sins Jas 1: 13-15
          1.  Lust - desire, or inclination, or bent
          2.  Enticed - conception
          3.  Act or sin
          4.  Death -result
     B.  Lust- epithumia (lit. a desire for what is forbidden, lust, desire)
          1.  Mk 4: 19 - desires for other things choke out the word.
          2.  John 8: 44 - Satan is your father and the lusts of your father ye will do
          3.  Rom 1: 24 - God gave them over to their lusts
          4.  Rom 6: 12 - allowing sin to reign will cause you to give in to your lusts
          5.  Rom 7:7 - had not known sin (lusts) except for except for what the law said
          6.  Rom 13:14 - "make no provisions for the flesh in regards to its lusts"
          7.  Gal 5:16 - Walk in the Spirit - and you won't fulfill the desire (lusts) of the flesh
          8.  Gal 5:24 - walking in Chrsit crucifies the passions and desires (lusts)
          9.  Eph 2:3 - they formerly lived in the lusts of their minds
         10.  Eph 4:22 - we are to lay aside deceitful lusts
         11.  1 Tim 6:9 - desires (lusts) are harmful and foolish and are ruinous
         12.  2 Tim 2:22 - flee youthful lusts
         13.  2 Tim 3:6 - weak women led by various impulses (lusts)
         14.  2 Tim 4:3 - many will listen to teachers that will tickle ears according to desires (lusts)
         15.  Titus 2:12 - deny ungodliness and worldly desires
         16.  Titus 3:3 - they were enslaved to varius lusts and pleasures
         17.  1 Pet 1:14 - don't conformed to your former lusts 
         18.  1 Pet 2:11 - "abstain from fleshly lusts that wage war against the soul"
         19.  1 Pet 4:2 - no longer live for the lusts but the will of God
         20.  1 Pet 4:3 - Gentiles indulged in lusts
         22.  2 Pet 1:4 - corruption is in the world by lusts
         23.  2 Pet 2:10 - some indulge the flesh in corrupt desires
         24.  2 Pet 2:18 - one can be enticed by fleshly desires (lusts)
         25.  2 Pet 3:3 - mockers follow after their own lusts
         26.  1 Jno 2:16,17 - the lusts of the flesh and the eyes will pass away
         27.  1 Jno 2:17 - lusts will pass away, but those that do the will of God will live forever
         28.  Jude 16,18 - grumblers and mockers follow after their own lusts
         29.  Matt 5:27,28 - adultery can be as early as lust in the heart 
5.  Sin is Unbelief.  Heb 3:12 (Apistias)
    A. Heb. 3:12,13 - the seriousness of an evil, unbelieving heart
    B. Jno. 16:9 - Jesus said "concerning sin because they do not beleive me"
6.  What is Not of faith is sin  Rom 14:23
    A. Whatever a man does he must believe in the righteousness of. (must keep a good conscience, 
        whatever we do right or wrong-)
    B.  Before his conversion Paul believed to kill Christians - but, if Paul refused to kill Christians,
         believing it right, is sin. 
7.  Knowing to do Good and doing it Not, to him it is Sin
    
A.  Matt 25: 31-46 - extended treatment of this
    B.  Gen 4:7 - "and if you do not do well, sin croucheth at the door"
 Note: Can a baby be a sinner unless he violates one of these definitions of sin?

CHARACTERISTICS OF SIN

1) Sin is Deceitful
    
A. Eph 4:22 - lusts of deceit

    B. Col 2:8 - empty deception can take captives
    C. Gen 3:13 - "the serpent deceived me"
    D. Rom 7:11 - sin deceived Paul
    E. Matt 13:22 - deceitfulness of wealth
    F. 2 Thess 2:10 - deception of wickedness
    G. 1 Cor 15:33 - "do not be deceived, bad company corrupts good morals"
2) Sin is Pleasurable  (apolausis - full of enjoyment) Heb 11:25
    A. Hedone - Greek: sweetness.  Luke 8:14; Titus 3:3; 2 Peter 2:13
    B. Spatalosa (To live voluptuously - self-gratification) 1 Tim 5:6
3) Sin is Universal (Romans 3:23) in church and out
4) Sin is Contagious (communicable) 1 Cor 15:33
5) Sin is Secretive Gen 3:8; Jno 3:19 - they who look every way but up


CAUSES OF SIN

1) Under influence of "Capable" Leaders  (1 Kings 15:30) Modernism, Sectarianism under influence of 
    leaders
    A.  Hitler's ides of s super race led people to leave their own conscience and adopt the ideals of 
         the state.
    B.  Many have led people to rationalistic atheism
    C.  A Brother can err and lead man into perdition because of the influence he has on them.
2) Deferrment of Punishment (installment plan buying)  Eccl 8:11
    A.  Ananias, though, was punished immediately (Acts 5).  Great fear came upon the church.
3) Desire for the pleasure in sin  Heb 11:25
4) Self-Willed (Col 2: 20-23)  Opposed to Heb 3:15.  At the core of sin is the exaltation of self.
5) Pride causes sin 1 Jno 2: 15-17
6) Lust causes sin. Jas 1: 13-15; 1 Jno 2: 16,17
 
CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

1) Spiritual Death  Ezek 18:20; Rom. 6:23
2) Physical Death  Rom 5: 12-14
3) Plague: Work for bread, Pain in childbirth Gen 3
4) Deadened conscience if persist in sin 1 Tim 4:2
 
5)
Unhappiness, miserable life, offended conscience
6) Broken friendship, homes, etc.  Eph 5:6; Col 3; 1 Pet 3; Pro 16:28
